Step 1: Prepare Bread and Apples : Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tbsp melted butter. Cube bread into 1-inch pieces and place in the prepared dish. Toss diced apples with 1 tsp cinnamon and a pinch of sugar (optional) and scatter evenly over bread cubes.
Step 2: Make the Custard : In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
Step 3: Assemble the Bread Pudding : Pour the custard evenly over the bread and apples, pressing gently with a spatula so bread absorbs the liquid. Let sit for 10–15 minutes to soak for maximum custardy texture.
Step 4: Bake : Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard is set (knife inserted near center should come out clean). Remove from oven and let cool for 10–15 minutes.
Step 5: Make the Caramel Sauce : In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and salt; bring to a gentle boil for 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in cream and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle over warm bread pudding before serving.
