Ingredients

  • For the Toast:
  • 4 slices of good-quality bread (rye, sourdough, or multigrain preferred)
  • 4 oz (115 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 4 oz (115 g) smoked salmon, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon capers (optional but recommended)
  • ½ small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil or butter, for toasting (optional)

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Toast Base : Lightly brush the bread slices with olive oil or butter (optional for extra crispiness). Toast the bread in a toaster or on a skillet until golden brown and crisp.
  • Step 2: Prepare the Cream Cheese Spread : In a small bowl, combine softened cream cheese with lemon zest, lemon juice, and a pinch of black pepper. Whisk or mix with a spoon until smooth and creamy.
  • Step 3: Assemble the Toast : Spread a generous layer of the lemon-dill cream cheese over each toast slice. Gently place slices of smoked salmon over the cream cheese. Top with red onion slices, capers (if using), and a sprinkle of fresh dill. Finish with an extra squeeze of lemon juice and a crack of black pepper.
  • Step 4: Serve and Enjoy : Serve immediately while the toast is still crisp and the toppings are fresh.
