Ground Beef Cabbage Rolls with Tomato Sauce

Ingredients
  

  • For the Cabbage Rolls
  • 1 large green cabbage
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • ½ cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp dried thyme or oregano
  • For the Tomato Sauce
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14 oz / 400 g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth

Instructions
 

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  • Remove core from cabbage and blanch leaves until pliable.
  • Set cabbage leaves aside to cool.
  • In a bowl, mix ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, egg, and seasonings.
  • Place filling on cabbage leaves and roll tightly.
  • Spread a layer of tomato sauce in a baking dish or pot.
  • Arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down.
  • Pour remaining sauce over rolls.
  • Cover and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour.
  • Let rest briefly before serving.
