Ingredients

  • For the Sloppy Joes
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted
  • For Serving
  • Pickle slices (dill or bread-and-butter)
  • Optional: shredded cheese, lettuce, or coleslaw

Instructions

  • Step 1: Cook the Beef : Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Step 2: Add Vegetables and Garlic : Add chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  • Step 3: Make the Sauce : Add ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5–10 minutes until sauce thickens slightly and flavors meld.
  • Step 4: Assemble the Sloppy Joes : Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom halves of toasted hamburger buns. Top with pickle slices and optional toppings like shredded cheese or lettuce. Place the top bun and serve immediately.
