Step 1: Combine Pasta and Liquid : In a large pot or deep skillet, combine pasta, chicken or vegetable broth, minced garlic, butter, salt, and pepper. Make sure the pasta is mostly submerged in liquid.
Step 2: Cook the Pasta : Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed (about 12–15 minutes). If adding heavy cream, stir it in during the last 2 minutes of cooking.
Step 3: Add Cheese : Remove the pot from heat and stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes as desired.
Step 4: Optional Add-ins : Fold in cooked chicken, shrimp, sautéed vegetables, or spinach if desired. Toss to combine so the pasta is evenly coated with sauce and ingredients are incorporated.
Step 5: Serve : Transfer pasta to serving plates or a large bowl. Garnish with fresh parsley and extra Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately while hot and creamy.
