- 2 (5-oz) cans tuna, drained
- 2–3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons red onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 4 slices sourdough bread
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (or Swiss, provolone, or your favorite)
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
Make the Tuna Salad In a bowl, combine tuna, mayonnaise, mustard (if using), celery, onion, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix well until creamy and evenly combined.
Assemble the Sandwich Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer tuna salad evenly. Place cheese slices on top, then close the sandwich with the second slice of bread, buttered side facing out.
Cook the Sandwich Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
Serve Slice diagonally and serve hot.
